Will you help me strip down to my undies for bowel cancer?
I'm running in Cancer Council’s Undies Run on the 21st of January!
In 2019 it will be my 5th year participating the Undies Run for Bowel Cancer, and this year is more exciting than ever!
Bowel cancer is currently the second leading cause of cancer death in South Australia, claiming over 400 lives every year. Did you know it's completely preventable? People are just too ashamed, shy or embarrassed to talk about it!
Because I am brave enough to run in my undies every year, I'm brave enough to tell my story too. I'm one of the lucky ones! 5 years ago now, a single polyp was found on my appendix. I was referred for a scope, and long story short I was subsequently diagnosed with Serrated Polyposis Syndrome. I continually grow multiple polyps all the time, and if left too long these can turn into cancer, so I'm in every 12 months for screening (please refer to super attractive hospital profile photo!).
I'm considered high-risk of developing bowel cancer, and I consider myself lucky to have had appendicitis so the doctors could discover my condition, but it scares me to think how many people simply don't know! If I can talk about my condition & my story enough, as uncomfortable as it makes some people to discuss matters of the bowel, I am winning because I may just save a life!
If you have any strange symptoms at all, any family history, or you just want to be on the safe side, don't be embarrassed and see your doctor! I'll be blunt, you'll be more embarrassed if you're suffering from a completely preventable cancer.
On a lighter note, I’m stripping down to my undies and running around Adelaide Oval before an Adelaide Strikers game to raise money for bowel cancer research and support services. Myself, and 199 other people will be running in our undies in front of 40,000 people!
If I can strip down to my undies in front of tens of thousands of people, you can donate to help make me do it!
Together we can knock bowel cancer for six!
